ABOUT MIA

Mia GranhΓΈj (b. 1986) is a self-taught ceramic artist from Copenhagen, Denmark. Her art practice currently revolves around the body, motherhood and the expectations of motherhood in our modern culture. With her stoneware sculptures, verging on abstraction, she wants to visualize the process that takes place when a woman becomes a mother. The term 'matrescence' covers all aspects of this transition (relational, biological, psychological, social etc.) Motherhood can be seen as a psychological revolution that changes one's relationship with virtually everything and everyone. From a feminist perspective, she is also interested in the workload in motherhood itself. Being the child's primary caregiver is expected of the woman, but is not considered a real job - where is the value of this caring work? Correcting that imbalance is feminism's unfinished work and a focal point in several of her sculptures.

Furthermore, her work explores themes related to the complexities of identity and mental vulnerability, drawing on contemporary culture and her own microcosm. She aims to go beyond the cliched image of family happiness which is still prevalent on social media.
