Mia Granhøj is a ceramic artist, based at an old factory in Hedehusene, not far from Copenhagen. Many of her stoneware sculptures are ceramic heads or masks. They are often disfigured, turned inside out, exposed, fragile and uncomfortable to look at. But it is from this place of discomfort that she dares us to look inwards and reflect. What about the unpleasantness of the sculptures distresses us? Are we afraid to expose our real self to the world? Can we not find acceptance and ultimately freedom in our vulnerability?
